Who is eligible for the Aid and Attendance Benefit?
- You received discharge from the service under any condition except dishonorable.
- You served at least 90 days and one of those days was during the WWll era, Korean War era, Vietnam era, or the Gulf War.
- Youre 65 years old or older.
- Total income less medical expense (including the cost of care in assisted living or at home) is less than your expenses.
- Net worth is a consideration, however many assets, such as your house and car, are not counted. There is no set limit on the amount of assets you can have, however there are some guidelines. How do you apply for the Aid and Attendance Benefit?
- You will need a copy of your discharge papers (DD-214). If you dont have this document we will send you a form to request a copy of your DD214 to be sent to you.
- You will need the Aid and Attendance application (either a veterans application or a widows applications). We will send you these forms.
- Surviving spouse must furnish a copy of a marriage certificate, and the veterans death certificate.
- Net worth informationÑbank statements, Stocks, Annunites, etc.
- Proof on income, interest statements, pension statement, etc.
- Proof of medical expenses and ongoing medical insurance premiums: Medicare part B, D, etc.
- A copy of your PhysicianÕs Statement. We will send you a form.
- List of doctors and hospitals you have used in the past year.
When will you receive the benefit?
It will take, on the average, six months for the application to be processed. However, the awarded benefit will be effective from the nearest month that the VA first received your application. This means that the first check will be a large one, As a result it is very important to get as error free application in to the VA as soon as possible. If the application is not error free it can significantly delay or cause a rejection of your application. After you complete the application we will review it for errors before it is submitted. This review is very important since most applications contain errors that most be corrected. This is a free service to veterans and their spouses.
